The Beginning of Snowboarding: The early years and attitudes
The twinklings of Snowboarding
began in the early 1920s. There is film footage of a snowboarder riding a
primitive snowboard down a Chicago
hill in 1939. In the 1960’s the commercial production and marketing of
snowboards began with the Snufer being an early
Snowboards and snowboarders
were not initially a favorite of the ski industry, for
the most part snowboarders were not respected and were looked down on at their
new startups. Snowboarders were perceived as rebellious and rowdy. The ski
industry and ski resorts thought this sport would simply disappear as quickly
as it came. They saw it as a fad. The Ski resorts did little to accommodate
snowboards and many resorts did not initially allow snowboarding. Nevertheless,
snowboarding survived the test of time and prevailed and now is a thriving
sport and was accepted into the Winter Olympics in 1998. Many thanks go to the
pioneers such as Poppen, Webber, Burton,
and Vision who engineered and produced innovative prototypes that propelled
the sport to where it is today.
Snowboarding is a relatively young sport but
is rapidly growing with much enthusiasm and innovation in equipment, gear and clothing.
